This article struck me. I first began to
read and understand the people of Istanbul and their victory to take back what
was theirs, the mosque, Hagia Sophia. The mosque was converted into a museum. Natives
built the mosque in 1453 as a sacred place to worship. In hearing the rich history,
culture, and pride, I was moved by the article. My heartfelt happy for the Muslim
people in Istanbul and their freedom to practice their faith in an
establishment that was meant to pray in. Prior to a mosque, the Hagia Sophia was
a cathedral in the Christian Byzantine Empire before the
Ottoman Empire conquered Constantinople in 1453 and changed its name to Istanbul.
Christian Byzantine Empire was the eastern part of the Roman Empire for
the Turkish people. People are torn in today’s world about their opinion on the
re-conversion of the mosque. Muslims are ecstatic and non-Muslim are saying it
should stay a museum for all to see and admire, as it is part of history. I
also can understand this aspect though I weigh in more on giving back the
Muslims their rightful and destined place to worship. Had I not taken this
Summer History course, I would not have completely understood or engaged in the
article, as I did not know much about the Christian Byzantine and Ottoman
Empires and Constantinople in 1453. Furthermore, it makes me appreciate the
rich history the mosque has and now understand that religion is always a
subject that creates war amongst human beings. So many times in history, the
wars are over land, material, or religion. It is no surprise people on social
media are firing back and forth on their disagreements, even as much as to shame
the other person with an opposing view. This too is like electronic warfare on
social media regarding religion. These people posting create followers, rally
the troops to rapid-fire back and forth on the internet, creating hate groups,
and further divide. This is the war of the new day.
